An award winning Filipino-American off-Broadway production, “The Romance of Magno Rubio,” comes to the SF Bay Area this weekend (Skyline College Theater, San Bruno)! Written by Lonnie Carter and directed by Loy Arcenas, the play is based on the short story from Philippine-born writer Carlos Bulosan. “Romance” follows the title character (Jojo Gonzalez) and his fellow farmworkers set in and around 1930s Stockton. Originally performed by the New York Ma-Yi Theater Company in 2002, “Romance” has toured all over the globe. Last weekend, “Romance” made it’s “homecoming debut” in Stockton’s Bob Hope Theater.
SF State Assistant Professor and Stockton native, Dawn Mabalon, has been passing the news on this play early this year and I’ve been counting down since. My sister and Sac State theater major, Krystle aka xLe, was fortunate to watch “Romance” last weekend in Stockton and she absolutely loved it! Steven Winn from SFGate.com wrote a terrific article this past Wednesday, not only about the play, but also the preservation of Stockton’s Little Manila.
I’m definitely excited to see it this Saturday! Tickets are $25! Call (415) 401-7157 or go to www.brownpapertickets.com for more information!
