The music business is not dying, it’s changing

With about 10 years of music industry experience in retail and marketing, I’ve seen the ups and downs- from one-hit wonders, developing artists, rise of CD sales, the fall of cassette singles. The hardest personally for me, was seeing my former employer, Tower Records, shutting its doors for good in December 2006. I was one of thousands who were laid off (yes we saw it coming, but stayed till the bitter end). Many of my friends and peers throughout the industry followed shortly as music labels and distributors began downsizing. Music artists I knew personally began to panic because there weren’t enough retailers to distribute their products. Many started to ask, “Is the music business dying?” I would simply reply, “No it’s changing.”

Speaking of change, here’s a video recently posted by my man, JP from the Vault, an independent music store in Sacramento. He’s still one of the handful number of friends I have left in the music business. We’ve shared many thoughts and insights on the business over the years. Music will always be around no doubt. How to sell music depends on your resources and committment to succeed. Money is not easy to make in music so you have to be ahead of the game. If you’re in Sacramento, please stop by the Vault and see what they got!
